On 10th April 1912 when Titanic set sail across the Atlantic on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City the RMS TITANIC was the largest passenger steamship in the world at that time. She was 52,310 tons, approximately 8,825 feet long, and 92.5 feet wide. TITANIC was under the command of Captain Edward I. Smith.
The ship carried some wealthiest people in the world as well as hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland. Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. The first-class accommodation on the ship was designed to provide comfort and luxury including high-class restaurants, a gym, a swimming pool, libraries, and furnished cabins. She carried only 20 lifeboats, 4 of which were collapsible.
On April 14, after 4 uneventful days of sailing, the Titanic received several reports from other ships about icebergs, but they didn’t heed. At about 11:30 pm a lookout saw a big iceberg coming out of haze straight ahead. He rang the bell as a warning and let phoned the bridge. The engines were reversed quickly, and the ship was turned sharply, instead of making a direct impact on the ship, the Titanic seemed to graze along the side of the iceberg, sprinkling ice fragments on the forward deck. The lookouts were relieved that there was no direct collision, but they had no idea that the iceberg had slashed a 300 feet gash in the hull below the ship’s waterline.
At that moment, the captain assessed the damaged section alongside two other individuals, Harland and Thomas Andrews. Shockingly, five compartments of the ship were already filling up with seawater, causing the bow of the ill-fated vessel to tilt dangerously downward.
Thomas Andrews swiftly calculated that the ship might stay afloat for approximately one and a half hours or a little longer. The captain, having already instructed the wireless operators to seek assistance, gave the order to load the lifeboats. Thus began a largely chaotic and disorganized evacuation, with the first boat being lowered, accommodating only 28 people instead of its intended capacity of 65.
Priority was given to women and children, and only after they had boarded were men allowed onto the lifeboats. Unfortunately, due to the disorderly procedures, many women and children failed to make it to the boats in the first place. Tragically, numerous victims were women and children. Amidst the confusion, families became separated, and some selfless individuals chose to sacrifice their spots in order to stay with their loved ones till the end. Ultimately, 607 people survived the Titanic’s sinking.
It took hours for accurate information to circulate widely, and even then, many struggled to accept the fact that such a technologically advanced marvel could sink on its maiden voyage, claiming the lives of over 1500 people.
